新世代公民的品質－Tom Burns的回答

由本校傳科所、北市和平高中、中華資訊與科技教育協會主辦的2012 ICEET國際研討會，已於6/22(五) 順利完成。當天開幕專題演講由 Intel 全球內容與服務總監Tom Burns 擔綱 ，講題為「雲端科技教育雲」。
Burns 的演講流露出對人的尊重，或許與他工作資歷有關，他曾隨著Intel 專案到過不少第三世界國家。演講時用的ppt及他舉的例子，多是他親身參與與實地觀察所得的第一手資料，而非僅是新科技資訊的「提供者」的角色；換言之，多了一份會設身處地，以及從當地人的眼光看資訊，這與不少科技專家或新貴言談間「顧盼自雄」的樣貌大異其趣。
大會手冊列出 Burns 演講大綱 ppt，有興趣的朋友可找來一讀。本篇談的是他演講後的答客問。
「客」是我，我把握有限時間，請教他二十一世紀的公民應具備哪些品質。Burns的回答如下：
1. 要有開放胸襟 (be open-minded)
要有開放胸襟，Burns 認為世界很大，我們要知道，對於不同的文化、不同國家的人民，我們有很多不知道的。僅以宗教為例，你知道對同樣的事情，如喪禮，有多少不同的宗教儀式？唯有心胸開放，才能對不同的人也以禮相待( I treat you with respect)，並平等的與他人合作。
2. 經常學習(constant learning)
Burns認為在我們父母那一代，社會變化的速度慢，但現在不然。十年前人們不知道什麼是WI-FI 無線上網；二十年前人們不清楚什麼是USB。
由於不停的創新，使得現今社會變化快速，我們必須要經常學習Constant learning，成為終生學習者，才不會跟不上時代，甚或被時代淘汰。
3. 面對改變向前行
對於新事物、新發明，我們要心存感謝(appreciation)，面對新局、面對改變，我們要移向前(moving ahead) ，如我們固執原地不動，會停滯，變成一攤死水。
讀者或者想，這三點不陌生，且好像跟科技或硬體設備沒什麼關係，不需花錢搞基礎工程、買設備，或新聘人員就能做到。我關注的，是發言者視域與高度，Burn將科技回歸到了使用者，且不僅是個人層次，更意味著鉅觀、廣泛的社會群體；亦即唯有人的素質提升，科技才能發揮事半功倍的效果。由科技公司主管口中說出這番話語，更發人省思。
