所長的話#05:本所課程

90.6.15新生座談時,提到了本所修業要點規定每學期修課的上限是15學分,且不分在職或一般生。與國內許多研究所規定的修課上限12學分相較,我們的標準顯得較寬。我們這樣的規定不表示本所的課業輕鬆,而是相信學習有個別差異,也許有同學能勝任15個學分,故寧可放寬上限。本所現碩一的研究生中修到12個學分的僅有兩位,他們兩人是用功的全職生,但幾次都表示這學期累壞了!因為不只是上課,還要讀書、準備報告、寫作業。以美國為例,美國學期制的大學,大多規定研究生修9個學分就是full-time student,修課上限是12學分,超過此限要指導教授同意。而除了課堂時間,研究所階段每一個學分還要有2-3倍的研讀時間。
研究所教育不是普及教育,有其對學術與研究上的堅持與要求;再者,本所的性質是日間班,是為學術研究奠基,不同於進修推廣部開在夜晚、週末、暑期的在職教學碩士班。今年本所的14 名新生中 (1名辦了保留),約有一半是在職生,我可以體諒在職生的辛苦,因為要兼顧工作與學業;但諸位要體認,就讀研究所是你的選擇,你要決定何者為主、何者為從。所以,提醒同學選課時要量力而為,此處的「力」不僅是指個人的能力,還包括了廣義的時間。尤其在職生,請評估你有多少時間可以投注在研究所的課業上?不要修了一堆課,應付不來,就和老師硬ㄠ。所裡的老師對於評量標準已有共識:我們會在學習過程中關心學生,但亦要求一定的水準,這方面我們不會放水的!
在排課方面,基於學習考量,原則上一天至多排五堂課。如果有同學以為我們在職生過半數了,所裡應該照我們的要求排課,比如最好一天半排完,從早上八點排到晚上十點,夜晚、週三下午也都要排。我在這兒要說,很抱歉,這樣的要求我們做不到。理由除了前述的學習考量,還要符合公平正義原則,因為也有同學是揮別職場、捨棄了薪水收入,專心來本所就讀的。
今年我們入學考不分一般生與在職生,除了避免有遺珠之憾,還有就是考量了現今碩一的三位在職生的表現,他們在勤學、努力、與同學相處方面,都做了最好的示範!
最後,建議諸位要開始調整學習的心態,考進本所不容易,接下來的日子少不了是忙碌與充實。諸位有任何疑問請隨時跟所裡反映,「禁於未發」,有小疑問就要解決,別忘了,你們有兩位學業學姐、七位生活學長姐,很樂於和大家分享他們的心得,可多向學長姐請教喔!
