PNC之四－柏克萊校園與校友

第一次造訪柏克萊是1978年底。利用寒假，從Laramie上I-80往西行，終點是加州灣區舊金山，在舊金山停留時造訪柏克萊校園。
那時美金對台幣匯率是一比四十，台灣經濟還沒有「台灣錢淹腳目」，大部分留學生，即使有獎助學金，也都勤儉持家。放假出門旅遊，倒不是財力雄厚，而是想趁著年輕開視野，增廣見聞，多接觸人與物，看看不同於Rocky Mountain High的風光。旅行雖花錢，但窮學生有窮學生的玩法，如翻出通訊本聯絡親友、同學，找打尖處；沒熟人的地方就找價格公道、清潔乾淨的旅店，反正新大陸的湖光山色與風土見聞 已經收穫滿盈，至於其他吃、住倒不需奢求。現在想起三十多年前「初生之犢」的遊興，別有一番滋味。
當時對柏克萊的印象一是學生運動與反戰(越戰)示威地，尤其越戰結束未久，電視或報章雜誌美國學生反戰的圖片記憶猶新；再者就是電影「畢業生」(graduate)的連想，因男主角Ben Braddock(Dustin Hoffman飾演)是柏克萊加大畢業生。該部電影「插曲數支、支支動聽」，片中許多歌曲出自鼎鼎大名的Simon & Garfunkel。這部片子是1967年的作品，但台灣上映的時間晚了些，因為劇中的畢業生，受父親朋友的太太引誘，之後又愛上這婦人的女兒，違背當時電檢尺度；後來片商考量台灣市場，修剪小部分影片，將母女的台詞拿掉，改為姊妹，這才過關。該片插曲「羅賓遜太太」(Mrs. Robinson)，指的就是劇中的婦人。
西行途中，首站是摩門教大本營UTAH州鹽湖城，正逢耶誕假期，滿城燈火璀璨，舉目所見盡是聖誕裝飾。遊客中心人員強力推薦去教堂感受一下，我們從善如流。美國的落磯山區號稱Wild West，離開鹽湖城愈見荒涼，I-80來往車輛多為貨櫃車，疾駛而過，路旁一片沈寂。駛進內華達州後，更是寸草不生，難怪該州不禁賭以招攬遊人發展觀光。我們在Reno 小停，還看了場Ann Margaret的秀，大停車場中很多車輛都是加州牌照，看來不少加州客來此小試身手。次日出發前特地往西南走了一段遠眺 Lake Tahoe ，我記得電影「教父第二集」第二代教父Michael Corleone (Al Pacino飾演) 劇中在Tahoe別墅遭對手槍擊。
在內華達州與加州交界處碰上大風雪，該處山區，冬天碰上天候不佳時，能見度極低，視線所及，路旁翻覆的車一輛接著一輛，令人膽戰心驚。收音機廣播一直提醒駕駛人換雪胎或加雪鍊，以免打滑發生意外。正常狀況估算兩個小時的行程，我們開了五個小時，才脫離風雪山區抵達加州首府Sacremento。這段路充分體會「如履薄冰」的意思，稱得上「慢行」。
抵舊金山期間，在我大學學長家打地鋪。學長高我兩屆，預官退役後到加大舊金山醫學院直攻博士；他在學校旁的公寓租屋，每日早出晚歸忙實驗，他當護士的太太要值大小夜班。學長說我們會開車到加州，自然不是一般觀光客，應知道怎麼在舊金山遊覽。我忙回說學長、大嫂忙，我們會自己找景點。除了坐cable car到中國城、漁人碼頭，還去了旅遊雜誌介紹的舊金山景觀路(scenic drive)、電報山等。
離開舊金山，往南到史坦福大學所在地Palo Alto之前，我們到Berkeley校園駐足。當天微雨中夾著海風，可能因為寒假，校園顯得空蕩蕩。走到Sather Gate ，不禁沈思，遙想七0年代反越戰示威如火如荼，1975越戰結束，也不過三、四年的時光，時移勢轉美國各大學校園恢復平靜，學生認清學生運動已劃下休止符，接下來得收心讀書、自我充實，才能在激烈的職場競爭中勝出。
柏克萊的校友，大家熟知的華裔人士有台大畢業、曾任柏克萊加大校長的田長霖先生，可惜英年早逝。還有現任美國能源部長、1997年諾貝爾獎得主，物理學家朱棣文(Steven Chu) 博士。以及寫女戰士的小說家湯婷婷。國內名人有親民黨主席，曾任台灣省主席的宋楚瑜先生，是柏克萊圖館系碩士。我2009年休假時，看到ABC電視台的節目dancing with stars 有一參賽者，網路名人Steve Wozniak，也是柏克萊加大校友。
倒是有些柏克萊的「假」校友相當出名，除了前述電影畢業生的男主角Ben Braddock，還有電視劇集「24小時反恐任務」( 24) 男主角 Jack Bauer，角色的背景也是柏克萊畢業生。
而無論時代如何轉變，柏克萊加大屹立，持續培育人才，領導社會邁入新紀元。
